Travel & Accommodation

The conference is held at the Muthgasse institutes of Boku University Vienna, in fast and easy reach by public transport or car from the city (10–20 minutes). Vienna has a well serviced international airport which is close to the city and features excellent public transport connections (20–30 minutes to the city).

The city of Vienna itself is renowned for its beauty, culture, and high general quality of life, so do plan a longer stop if you can take some time out!

Getting there

The institute address is AT-1190 Muthgasse 18, and meetings will be held in the lecture room XXI on the ground floor of the main buildings. The institute is easily reached by public transport (ticket options) or by car. A choice of excellent public transport connections (e.g., tube U4 Heiligenstadt) is displayed in the interactive online map of the City of Vienna. In this combined aerial photo & map, the institute building in Muthgasse is marked by a red circle and transport connections are shown in colour (simple map for printing). The transport operators offer a convenient online route planner, which generates maps complete with walking instructions to and from the specified addresses.

From the airport (station Flughafen), the easiest route takes one by regional train (S-Bahn or CAT) to the central station Wien Mitte. There, change to the tube and use line U4 all the way to Heiligenstadt. The journey time from Wien Mitte is about 9 minutes, the trip from the airport to Heiligenstadt takes a total of 36–44 minutes. From station Heiligenstadt it is then but a brief 7-minute walk to the institute.

In case you are coming by car, the institute also has an underground car park. There is a fee if you stay for more than two hours. If you are driving along the Donaukanalbundesstraße, take the Döbling exit; coming from the Donauuferautobahn, use exit Nordbrücke (note that this is the second exit in an adjacent pair of slipways!). The car park entrance is in Muthgasse.

Accommodation

It makes sense to go for a hotel in the city centre, ideally close to the Wien Mitte station where the trains from the airport arrive and from where you can take the U4 tube line to the conference site. The Schwedenplatz area is an optimal choice.

If you prefer something more personal than a standard hotel chain, we can recommend

  • Pension Riedl, located on one of the top floors of a charming and quiet turn of the century building (high ceilings, many rooms with parquet floor, some with newly refurbished elegant modern bathrooms). This address is in an excellent location for the city, the airport, and our institutes. You may wish to request en-suite rooms (about 70 Euro for a single).
  • Hotel Alma, formerly Pension Christina, located in a quiet cul-de-sac close to the Danube canal. Just a few minutes walk from Pension Riedl and hence in just a convenient location for the city, airport, and institutes. Best ask for a double room in one of the top floors (fourth floor or higher, 115 Euro). Their web-page is still under construction, the best way of reaching them is by email to christina@pertschy.com or phone +43 1 5332961-0.

For a four star standard hotel in a very convenient location, you can go for one of

  • Hilton Vienna, close to the Stadtpark (city park). Ask for a room at one of the higher up floors as they are more quiet. Rates are from 139 Euro per night.
  • Hotel Mercure Biedermeier. Perhaps a less well known chain but maybe a little more charming.
  • Hotel Mercure Zentrum. While the above two options are next to the airport train station, this hotel lies one stop closer to the conference site on the U4 tube line and may be in a little more quiet location.

If you want to treat yourself to one of the most flashy and famous hotels in Vienna (and you do not mind the expense) the best address will be the

  • Hotel Imperial. Visit their homepage to learn more about this distinguished address (rooms from about 345 Euro per night).

For those travelling on a budget, check out

  • Dan in'n out, which offers good value rooms in a central location (U4 Schottenring is 10 minutes walking and on the tube line to the conference site).
